This talk by Professor James Sweeney of Stanford University has affected my thinking about climate change solutions more than any other…
His research shows that all-things-efficiency is our heaviest hitter, numerically, as well as likely the best way to do a “get there fast,” as the cops say.
Jim Sweeney is director of Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency as well as senior fellow of the Hoover Institution.
He is the author of the 2016 book showing data and conclusions that support this video, “Energy Efficiency: Building a Clean, Secure Economy.”
(Full disclosure: As a Lean Manufacturing and Lean Distribution practitioner and career-long cost accountant, when I realized that efficiency, applied across society, is our most powerful global warming solutions tool, well… safe to say my “brain-candy” knob is now permanently stuck in the on position. You might also check out Amory Lovin’s Rocky Mountain Institute for more research on the powerful role energy efficiency is playing in global warming solutions.)
Sweeney’s research helps me answer a key strategy question: How does civilization decide which Vital-Few solutions to work on and avoid working on the Trivial-Many…

Not sure where to start saving the planet (civilization, really)? Our Thesis Statement is: “Start by deeply knowing your personal Superpowers: ”
3) Use Your Voice and take advocacy seriously! Never miss a chance to vote, and never ever stop influencing your government and all businesses locally, at the state level, and at the national level. It’s on you to lead the way with global warming solutions.
And in all cases and at all times, cast aside the learned-helplessness that infects so much of modern life… the time is now for climate change solutions.
